    • 1). Insert the Ubuntu CD or DVD into your computer's optical drive. Reboot the computer. It will boot into the Ubuntu installer.

    • 2). Follow the installer's prompts until you arrive to the "Prepare disk space" step. Select the "Manual" method and then click "Forward." The installer will display, at the top of the window, a map of the free (grey) and occupied (other colors) space on the disk.

    • 3). Click on the free space on the disk map and then click on "New partition." Enter the size of the home partition you want in Megabytes and then select "Beginning." Select "Ext3 journaling file system" from the drop-down menu next to "Use as:," then select "/home" from the drop-down menu next to "Mount point:".

    • 4). Create any other partition (e.g., the root partition mounted at "/") you need in your system. When you are done, click "Forward." The Ubuntu installer will create all the partitions you specified.
