How to Learn the Windows XP Registry
- 1). Create a backup of your registry. Press the "Windows" button and "R"key at the same time to bring up the "Run" window. Type "regedit." Click "File," then "Export." Ensure that "all" is selected under "Export range." Name and save the backup (which is a .reg file) to your desktop.
- 2). Make an edit using the Registry Editor. In the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. Here, you can make edits to the desktop such as your screensaver or wallpaper.
- 3). Double-click "SCRNSAVE.EXE" to begin changing your logon screen saver.
- 4). Type the path and filename, which is the value, of the new screen saver that you want to switch to in the "Value data:" box, and then click "OK." For example, if you want to change the screen saver to the "Bubbles" screensaver, which comes pre-installed on Microsoft Windows, you will need to type "C:\Windows\system32\Bubbles.scr" into the "Value data:" box.
- 5). Close the Registry Editor. This change will take effect immediately. To undo this change, either load the backup by double-clicking the .reg file or return to the registry path specified in step 2, double click "SCRNSAVE.EXE" and change the value back to the original .scr file.
