    • 1). Use an application or Web service such as GIF to AVI SWF Converter, River Past Video Cleaner or Open Video Convertor to convert the GIF you'd like to use as wallpaper into an AVI file.

    • 2). Open VLC and click its "File" menu. Click the "Advanced open" command to display a dialog box with controls for choosing a video file to play.

    • 3). Click the "File" tab on the dialog box, then click the "Add" button located to the right of the "File selection" box. VLC displays another dialog box with which you can navigate to the video file you made from the GIF file.

    • 4). Use the controls of the "Select files" dialog box to move to the folder containing your AVI file, then click that file to select it for loading into VLC. Click the dialog box's "Open" button to load the video for playing. The "File selection" text area of the "Open media" dialog box now displays the full pathname of the file you loaded. Note that you can load additional videos to play after or before your converted GIF animation.

    • 5). Click the "Play" button of the "Open media" dialog box to begin playing the AVI file you loaded. VLC's display area shows the images from the GIF you made the AVI from.

    • 6). Click the "Video" menu to display a list of commands and options that impact video playback. Click the "DirectX wallpaper" item to close the menu and return to the main VLC interface. Click the button at the bottom of the application window whose icon is shaped like two arrows flowing into each other. This action selects the "Loop" option, which makes the current loaded video repeat until you click the "Pause" or "Stop" buttons.

    • 7). Click the icon on the Windows taskbar whose thumbnail shows a generic Windows desktop. This action minimizes all application windows so you can see your desktop. The desktop now displays the AVI movie you made from the GIF.
